Fraxel and Fractional LaserÂ
Fractional lasers dramatically enhance the appearance of the skin by triggering the body’s natural healing response. The lasers create micro-wounds within the dermis, which stimulate the production of collagen fibers and new cell growth. By combining the fractional and non-ablative processes, fractional lasers can deliver noticeable, long-lasting results with minimal post-treatment downtime for patients.Â

How does a Fractional Laser Treatment Work?
Fractional lasers stimulate the production of collagen by gently heating deeper layers of the dermis. More superficial layers of the epidermis can also be targeted. As a vital protein that builds and supports our connective tissues, collagen gives the skin its firm, elastic appearance. Around age 30, our bodies gradually produce less collagen, which weakens the dermal structure. This loss of collagen can result in fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin. Additionally, our cell turnover begins to slow, causing our skin to look increasingly dull and damaged with age.
By stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin, fractional lasers can repair your skin at a cellular level. Even better, these devices target damage with individual beams of energy so that the surrounding tissue is left intact. This unique process allows the body’s natural healing processes to more quickly heal and revitalize your skin, slow signs of aging, and reverse the effects of sun damage non-invasively, with minimal downtime.
CAN A FRACTIONAL LASER BE USED FOR SCAR REMOVAL?
Fractional lasers are a great option for the treatment of acne scarring, surgical scars and other types blemishes. The treatment is especially effective on deep or traumatic wounds like those left by burns as well sun spots due in part to their ability to stimulate collagen production, which helps improve elasticity for younger-looking appearance

how much do fractional laser treatments hurt?
All of our fractional laser treatments are performed by board-certified dermatologists who make patient comfort a top priority. We typically apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment to ensure that our patients feel comfortable. While you may feel a sensation of heat during the treatment, we integrate air cooling into the process to minimize any potential discomfort. If you’re sensitive to pain, our doctors can offer additional anesthetic options.
When Will I See Results from fractional laser treatment?
How long it takes to see results depends entirely on the treatment you choose. While superficial treatments can generate visible results within weeks after your skin heals, deeper treatments may take up to a few months to see noticeable improvements. Many patients experience lasting results for up to 1 year after a treatment regimen.
how long is the recovery time after fractional laser treatment
Recovery from fractional laser therapy varies widely and depends upon which laser is used and the settings at the time of the treatment. While you can typically resume your normal activities immediately after a superficial treatment, more intense treatments may involve more downtime for your skin to heal properly.

can men get fractional laser treatments too?
Fractional laser treatments are ideal treatments for men who want to rejuvenate their skin for a refreshed appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 75,000 men in the U.S. sought laser skin resurfacing treatments in 2018 alone.Â
Men, like women, experience many common signs of skin aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, and overall dullness. Still, a man’s skin is quite different from a woman’s, so it’s important to seek treatment from a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist with plenty of experience treating men.
The board-certified dermatologists at Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Pennsylvania have specialized training and a breadth of experience in treating male skin. All of our laser treatments are performed by skilled physicians who can create a customized plan that addresses your skin concerns.

Questions and Answers
Q: Are Fractional Laser Treatments Safe?
A: Fractional lasers only target a fraction of the skin without disturbing the surrounding tissue in between. When performed by an experienced board-certified dermatologist, fractional laser treatments are safe and effective at minimizing the signs of aging and improving the skin’s appearance.
Q: Are Fractional Laser Treatments Painful?
A: At Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Pennsylvania, our board-certified physicians typically apply a numbing anesthetic to the skin prior to treatment. You may feel the sensation of heat, but our simultaneous air cooling should keep you comfortable throughout your session.
Q: Do Fractional Laser Treatments Have Side Effects?
A: Side effects associated with non-surgical fractional laser therapy are typically mild and temporary. Most patients experience minimal swelling, redness, and peeling — similar to a sunburn. These effects should subside within 1-7 days depending on the treatment performed, but it’s important to protect your skin and stay out of the sun for at least 2 weeks after treatment.
Q: How Many Fractional Laser Treatments Will I Need?
A: Since all of our treatments are tailored to each patient’s specific needs and aesthetic goals, there is no standard number. However, most patients require about 3-5 treatments, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, to safely achieve their desired results.
Q: When Will I See Results From Fractional Laser Treatment?
A: Many patients see noticeable improvements in the appearance of their skin within weeks of their treatment. Since fractional lasers work by stimulating your body’s own natural collagen production, your skin will continue to slowly improve until you reach your optimal results in about 2-3 months.
Q: How Often Should I Get Fractional Laser Treatments?
A: After your initial course of treatments, you can return to Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Pennsylvania for any touch-up treatments to maintain your results.
