What Is Radiesse?

radiesse logo

Radiesse is a powerful volumizing dermal filler that also stimulates new collagen formation. Its unique formula effectively smooths and volumizes moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, strengthens the chin and jawline, and improves the appearance of aging hands. The collagen-stimulating nature of Radiesse also provides structural support to the underlying tissues.

At Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Pennsylvania in Devon, our board-certified dermatologists perform all our injectable treatments, using skill and experience to properly administer the filler into the correct location so that results are natural and beautiful.

How does RADIESSE WORK?

Radiesse filler works deep into the skin’s dermal layers to restore support lost due to collagen depletion. A protein found in the dermal structure, collagen is one of the most essential components of smooth, firm, and healthy skin. However, as we age, our bodies produce less collagen, resulting in lower skin elasticity and volume, as well as wrinkle formation.

Radiesse is a unique filler because it is made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a gel. When injected, it immediately smooths wrinkles and enhances facial contours. However, the calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) particles will also trigger the body’s own collagen production, leading to long-lasting correction and natural improvement.

By restoring volume and support, Radiesse effectively reverses some signs of aging to refresh and rejuvenate your appearance.

How Is Radiesse Used to Treat Wrinkles?

When injected into specific areas of the face and hands — mainly around the mouth and jawline, or back of the hands, Radiesse fills in the lines, wrinkles, and folds where volume has been lost.

The filler creates a scaffold that lifts the skin from the inside out, effectively smoothing lines and wrinkles and helping to recontour the cheeks and jawline. As new collagen is produced, the skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more elastic.

What Is A Radiesse Treatment Like?

Radiesse is a safe and effective, minimally-invasive treatment option for addressing lost volume and wrinkles. It is quick and straightforward – taking less than 30 minutes – and many patients find the treatment relatively comfortable. Our board-certified dermatologists can also provide topical numbing cream or other options before your Radiesse injections to help improve your experience.

Our board-certified dermatologists use a small needle or microcannula based on the size of the treatment area. After treatment, patients can typically resume daily activities immediately.

How Long Do Radiesse Treatments Typically Take?

Results from Radiesse treatments typically last between 12 and 18 months, as the particles in the filler boost collagen levels over time. You can maintain your rejuvenated appearance with regularly scheduled treatment sessions.
Our board-certified dermatologists can recommend when and how often to have regular maintenance treatments to prolong your improvement.

Am I A Good Candidate for Radiesse?

We typically recommend Radiesse to patients who have moderate to severe static lines around their nose and mouth or have lost facial volume. It is also an ideal treatment option for those who have noticed a loss of volume in the hands due to aging and sun damage, or anyone who prefers a non-surgical approach to skin rejuvenation.

Radiesse is safe and effective for all skin types and tones. We encourage you to schedule a filler consultation in our Devon office to find out if Radiesse is the right choice for you.

When Should I Start Seeing Results?

You will see improvement in your wrinkles immediately following your treatment. There may be some mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites that may delay immediate results.

Results typically last for up to 12-18 months, courtesy of the collagen boost that occurs in the months following your procedure.

    FAQ

Q: Is Radiesse approved by the FDA?

A: Yes. The FDA approved Radiesse in 2006 as a safe and effective treatment for moderate to severe facial lines and creases. It has a proven track record of safety and success.

    Q: Is Radiesse treatment painful?

A: Most patients find their Radiesse treatments to be relatively comfortable due to the application of a topical numbing cream before the procedure begins. Injections are done by needle or blunt-tipped cannula and take just a few minutes to complete.

Q: Will I experience any side effects after my Radiesse treatments?

A: Side effects from dermal fillers like Radiesse are uncommon and temporary if they do occur. Some patients can experience slight redness, swelling, and bruising, which are expected to subside after a couple days.

Q: How is Radiesse different from an HA filler?

A: HA fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane are designed to seamlessly integrate into skin tissues (HA is already found in soft connective tissues, including the skin). HA works by attracting and holding water, providing moisture, and making the skin look plump and hydrated.

Radiesse is a gel filler containing calcium-based microspheres containing a substance found in bones and teeth. Calcium particles won’t just plump the skin but will also stimulate the body’s own production of collagen. The gel is absorbed over time and the body metabolizes the calcium microspheres, leaving behind the body’s naturally produced collagen for longer-lasting results.

The calcium-based microspheres provide strong support for deeper wrinkles and nasolabial folds, as well as strengthen the jawline and chin.

Another key difference is that HA fillers can be dissolved, while calcium-based fillers cannot. Therefore, Radiesse results cannot be fully reversed.

Q: How long will my Radiesse results last?

A: Results typically last for 12 to 18 months, as the particles in the filler boost collagen levels over time. You can maintain your refreshed appearance with regularly scheduled touch-up treatment sessions.

Our board-certified dermatologists will recommend the best maintenance treatment plan to extend your results.
